Guests arriving at the ranch never really know what to expect when they follow along the windy road towards Ojai. Those timeless imaginations of rustic wagons and delightful pot luck offerings become a reality when they encounter the energy of the Festival Queen and the Vibe Technician.  We laughed around the fire, danced under the moonlight, hung under the trees, and hiked to higher ground for our second sun setting this Easter weekend in Ojai.mountains

Something natural in the air happened when the moonlight poured itself over the grassy fields that gathered the cowboys and Indians together.  I didn’t hear the coyotes howling in the distance this year, but then I realized I was surrounded by them at peace as the princess coyote guided the path.

It was a peaceful gathering this year that was one for the books for the moon burned bright, and engaged conversation on the trails to the trailers. Cowboys and Indians comes so fast and leaves so soon, but it still felt like an eternity of laughs and unforgettable memories.

Easter Sunday was so special, but awkward as I woke up outside next to the fire and not anywhere near my tent, but there was no time for rough mornings for this cowboy as Easter Sunday needed the piñata man to work the rope.

Ellinor Olovsdotter, better known as Elliphant, is a provocative, lawless Swedish pop-artist with a sound that is a cross between M.I.A. and Diplo. No wonder she is joining M.I.A.’s tour in Canada with performances in Montreal and Toronto, May 3rd and May 4th. She is a definite uprising superstar and the real musicians that listen just know it – including Coachella’s most recent popular, live electronic-act, SKRILLEX, who she is collaborating with and thus pushing her music out further into the masses. This chick knows how to throw it down hard LIVE, with a progressive reggaetonesque, hip-hop, dance-beat that blasts you into a sexual, rhythmic, body pulsation.

We had pre-drinks in Venice and got warmed up for the show as we were super-charged to catch ELLIPHANT sing her songs that we have been vibing to lately.

Elliphant’s mesmerizing show is filled with her sweaty, sexy dance-moves, as her hair flies around with her fingers pointing out, shaking her booty with confidence while laughing and singing her provocative songs like “BOOTY KILLAH”, “BITCH OUT”, and “MAKE IT JUICE” – progressive beats that palpitate a crowd into a surging wave as her lyrics just flow. It is rare to fine a caucasian in this genre with authentic talent, and even to find one that is a confident, sexy female that shows us how to really move. Her strong use of language falls in line with her music with “DOWN ON LIFE”, an addicting melody with intro lyrics that thump your body into a lampoon of laughter: “we are waking up in a pile of shit, whole bed, is full of it”. She breaks-down the audience into heavy movement as she delivers the catchy chorus: “I could use a break, me need to go, down down down – on life, I need you to to take, all my shadows for a walk tonight”.

Her debut album, titled “A Good Idea”, has a heavy, urban sound with heavy beats and breaks that bring energetic changes, and fast, melodic, shocking-sexy lyrics that echo the vibrations of reggaeton and Denmark’s “danskhall”. She proved to me that she is right in line with the authenticity of the roots of a mix of genres, like Jamaican dance-hall and reggaeton – as a heavy sweaty dance-show is what the mecca of real reggae is all about, and Elliphant’s show at Bardot would have moved the toughest crowd down in Kingston or Montego Bay into loving and respecting her because she MAKE YA WANNA MOVE. No wonder she traveled to the island to collaborate with Jamaica’s Ras Fraser Junior. They feel her. Her energetic songs capture me into hopping around on the dance floor when her raw energy draws into you, similar to how Jamaican legend BUJU BANTON would make me feel at a live show.

Her music also echoes progressive pop music and that is probably why she is fusing and collaborating with such acts like SKRILLEX that are now super popular at big festivals like Coachella. I’m not sure what they are drinking in the water up in Stockholm, but this Northern European, Elliphant, has taken hip-hop and Jamaican influence and made it her own in progressive pop. Her Swedish dictation of the English Language and native accent has given her edge into spitting out her English words into hypnotic phrases that roll off her tongue with attitude similar to the way an authentic dredlock-islander with talent would hope to.

Although her sound seems to be more influenced by reggaeton and dance-hall, she probably listens to classic, energetic hip-hop music to gear her up to create this type of Scandanavian pop. African Americans created hip-hop because their genetics lead them there from their rhythmic, African roots, with their unique use of the English language, and distinct African-American culture, giving them a different dictation then a caucasian-American. Maybe it’s her Swedish accent that helps her flow the way she does.

I had the pleasure of hanging out with ELLIPHANT on a farm recently where she stormed around the dusty ranch on the dirt road naturally in bare-feet, energetic and always laughing with her Swedish crew and friends from Los Angeles.  People that didn’t even know of her music would still feed off her funny, positive vibes and style. Some of her Swedish crew and friends that were at a recent private festival in Ojai, joined together at Bardot to get down with her; backstage they were all pumped up after the show as it was a success.

Most Americans that I know don’t understand how hip-hop is taking off in Northern Europe in different native tongues, not English; especially Denmark, where local, legendary, hip-hop artists draw large crowds as hip-hop is most popular now to the uprising youth. It’s the way the Danish and Dutch languages are spoken, allowing words to come out freely, rhythmic and speedy with hip-hop. There are some very talented singers in Northern Europe that us Americans know nothing about because we don’t understand Danish or Dutch, nor will those underground, local singers be promoted in the American corporate music industry because they aren’t singing in English.

Copenhagen has a KILLER outdoor venue, located in an autonomous region of Copenhagen called CHRISTIANA, an ex-military area from the 1970s that was squatted by artists and turned into a ruffian free-zone area where marijuana and hash is traded freely in open kiosks on the street. CHRISTIANA is a lawless area which has become a center for the arts and music and a sort of legal drug-trade area in a country where drug trade is illegal, and this is the place where the hardcore hip-hop acts perform in Copenhagen. An authenticity is always brought to art when it is underground, dirty, raw, and on par with the ruffians and the dregs. Every reggae musician outside Jamaica wants to play in Jamaica, but they will probably just get shot down in Kingston because to Jamaicans their music is their life, and their lives were oppressed, so don’t ruin their life with shitty reggae please. BUT THEY RESPECT ELLIPHANT. Who knows, maybe I’ll be lucky enough to catch ELLIPHANT throw it down at CHRISTIANA in Copenhagen, Denmark. I am thankful she is in America and singing in English and giving us a window into where music is going in Northern Europe.

Im a music-lover, and it is rare for me to find up-and-coming acts in small venues that are throwing it down hard, walking on the edge of super-stardom with addicting energy that gets you slammed with musical excitement – it’s all about luck and timing to witness a killer show in a tiny venue and know that it was a special night that will be lost in time but forever remembered. Years ago, I walked into a small club on Sunset blvd, the Roxy, and witnessed a very young, long-haired Kings of Leon throw it down with raw, exciting energy while heavily smoking and proving themselves to be the shit – the timing of that show made it one of the best shows of my life as they had a buzzing energy, firing off on all cylinders; the next time I saw the Kings of Leon, I knew I would never see them the same after their performance in a much bigger venue, The Hollywood Bowl. I will probably never see them in a venue as small as the Roxy ever again, and now I witnessed Elliphant at Bardot, a small club in Hollywood.  I am hoping she doesn’t blow up the charts too fast so I can gain access into a small club and see her throw it down hard again.

crowd two

players rights

Next time I see her rock a crowd, it will most likely be a much larger venue, so catch her now if you can, cause she is an ELLIPHANT IN THE ROOM, and she probably needs more room cause she stomps all over the place in your face. I knew the live band that followed her set, DWNTOWN, had a very tough act to follow as ELLIPHANT took us all to SKOOL at Bardot on School Night.

Mondays at Bardot:

DWNTOWN played to a much emptier room, but ELLIPHANT was a tough act to follow.

bardot blonde

DWNTOWN came with a full live-band with a great vibe, beautiful singer, good music, and apparently with a music buzz, but Elliphant’s show was on a whole other level, making it an extremely hard act to follow because her beats are so heavy, melodic, and she spits out on the mic honest and hard while shaking her hips. Any shift to another musical energy could clear out some of the room which happened – the audience already got their heads kicked off for the night – fucking raw, sexual attitude, and honest entertainment.

hanging backstage

drinking beer

Elliphant spoke to the crowd on the mic and shared with everyone with her thoughts between some songs, connecting, and then throwing it down to her next hit single. She brought it to the table with dirty, sexual vibes as she sang “BOOTY KILLAH”. She then lead into an anthemic, rebellious “REVOLUSION” that makes you want to dance-riot. Maybe that’s why when she finished her set, the crowd surrounded her with a demanding applause for a proper encore. We all wanted more. I guess we are needing a fresh taste of what raw, female singers should sound like and what hot shows should be like, and HOW YOU MAKE ME WANT TO FEEL LIKE – yep, ELLIPHANT is the BOOTY KILLAH.

encore encore two

nude photo

My band, PUNAMI, echoes the influences of my love for reggae. What I have learned from my elder, reggae mentors is that if you are a musician heavily influenced by that genre, you need to be your own, intelligent, natural-self, and Elliphant is more then just that, she is completely unique and just makes ya WANT TO MOVE.

ELLIPHANT would make reggaeton legend, NANDO BOOM proud. NANDO, a reggaeton and “reggae en Espanol” singer from Panama is known as a super-legend that brought grinding dance moves that changed the way people danced. I grew up in the Republic of Panama, where I started drinking and dancing downtown Panama as a white, 15 year-old teenager in dark, smoky Panamanian clubs where sweaty grinding to reggaeton was just Panamanian culture. I love that SHIT. The only thing we danced to was reggaeton – which moved the entire club into a sexual surge on the dance floor, everyone holding their partners body to body, grinding eachother so close that an American would think we were SCREWING ON THE DANCE FLOOR, but it was just reggaeton DANCING-LOVE.

dancing crowd

Reggaeton is very sexual – you can always feel a woman’s sexual language when you move to this style of music as hips connect on the belt and you move with eachother in sexual rhythm. Men and women can feel eachother and know if he or she is a good lover by the way they connect on the reggaeton dance-floor, knowing if it will be good sex or bad in bed is known by how you move and dance and what energy you bring to the floor. I miss living in Panama and dancing in reggaeton clubs where everyone is on a heavy vibe together getting dirty but just good fun times. In the United States i feel disconnected from the crowd and a disconnection with the crowd from the band. It is not like where I am from in Panama, or like Jamaica, where THE AUDIENCE IS JUST AS MUCH A PART OF THE MUSIC AS THE MUSIC IS A PART OF THE BAND.

finger pointing

crowd one

That is reggae at it’s best – the LIVE SHOW with the AUDIENCE feeling it.  The venue is where it all happens with this type of music. I have been missing this energy in the United States, and the people in the club THAT REALLY KNOW HOW TO HAVE A FUCKING GOOD TIME. People can be SO FUCKING BORING on the dance floor.  Maybe ELLIPHANT is here to SHOW AMERICANS HOW TO DANCE in sexual style and how to have A GOOD TIME. Yes, I consider myself AMERICAN as well, but that doesn’t mean I dance like one. Probably because I grew up sweating to HOT DANCE-music while going through puberty. I have to thank my love for the dance movement to legendary Panamanians like NANDO BOOM for songs like “FIESTA” and El GENERAL for songs like “MUEVELO”.

“Americana” Long Beach Folk Revival by RIOTstage, the Lot at Madhaus, downtown Long Beach

americana brochure

If you are a music lover, an art connoisseur, or just looking for a good party, then you would have had a blast at this epic event “Americana” which took place in downtown Long Beach on Friday 4/25 and Saturday 4/26. Americana was a two-part show that brings together some Long Beach musical All-Stars with jams and spoken-word theatrics, commencing in a beautifully decorated lot and outdoor venue, and ending inside an industrial space art-gallery designed by a talented curator.

Americana took place at the Madhaus, 624 Pacific Avenue, Long Beach. Saturday, 4/26, was the last night to catch this rare, special event that brings local artists and musicians together in a collaborative, experimental fashion, and holds true to an artistic, Americana themed night of energetic live-music and live painting. this is my rifle 2

The Americana theme gave justice to songs like California by Joni Mitchell, California by Rufus Wainwright, America by Prince, and contemporary songs like Lua by Bright Eyes. Watching this event is really like getting a fresh taste of some excelling local, Long Beach musicians and artists and a good feel of how powerful, connected ensemble groups can wonderfully perform together music they love.

The Ensemble is a collection of talented musicians that have their own bands and projects, but they often collaborate, and this collaboration brings a powerful, theatric sound, connecting to the roots of the Americana theme.

Neil Young’s Harvest Moon was eloquently played, softly providing a pleasant mood and foreground to the abstract artwork of this industrial space in downtown Long Beach. The amount of talent amongst the singers and musicians was really impressive, and this crew really loves to explore the theatrics of performance art as well.

Symbiosis Gathering 2013

I drive away from Symbiosis Gathering at the Woodward Reservoir in California, enchanted by the warm and wonderful connections I made.  I ventured here alone, not quite sure what to expect, but I did hope for something wonderful and unexpected. After I pitched my tent along the water, an endless adventure of yoga, meditation, dance, and artwork ensued.

Symbiosis is defined as an interaction between two different organisms living in close physical association, typically to the advantage of both; a mutually beneficial relationship between different people or groups.  There isn’t a better definition that encompasses my magical experience that this event was able to create in such a short amount of time, simply because this festival is a gathering of people that have a similar interest of loving life, our planet, music, creativity, and the sustainability of everything in hopes to create happiness that is shared with one another by embracing our Mother Earth.

flute man

skateboard kid

The hypocrisy of these major events is a relevant topic because the earthly-principled standards of what these festivals dictate do not always jive with the generation of trash and consumerism that they digest.  However, this festival does provide a temporary environment for the “civilized” to live outside the normal commerce of civilized life.  One can feel that our society is uncivilized when you examine the big picture of mass-consumerism which feeds our addicted, gluttonous economy while bleeding our generous planet of her beautiful resources and polluting her in the process.  Freegans and their “anti-consumerist” ideologies proudly showed up at Symbiosis, digging for tasty vegan meals out of the trash.  Mother Earth loves Freegans.

At Symbiosis you can easily get involved in a deep discussion about understanding how sustainable beliefs and behaviors are in conflict, and that is why events like these are important and relevant even though there are many hurdles to overcome until ideals equate with real actions by the majority.  You can find eco-friendly, intelligent earth-lovers that are eager to converse about change.

The social conscious of the youth may be advancing towards understanding the consequences of consumption and how each individual has an unseeingly, substantial contribution to the cumulative effect of every problem and solution – if only we could come together and act on our unified understanding of this we could create no waste or at least manage it more efficiently to renew energy and sustain resources.  Festivals like Symbiosis and Burning Man are trying to make a difference, but at times there purpose is lost in the shuffle of a seemingly endless party.  Maybe there were answers found at the many available discussion groups and seminars at Symbiosis, if not, at least they tried and had a good time doing it.

If you have a conversation with a festival waste-management employee, then you will see the disgusting problem that exists at most festivals from Bonarroo to Coachella to Burning Man.  It takes weeks on end for Bonarroo to clean up abandoned camp-sites and overflowing trash bins, and this problem is easier for them to solve because Bonarroo owns the land, allowing them to develop compost areas on site.

Unlike some festivals, Symbiosis Gathering is a festival on the move, which keeps a relatively small, dedicated following.  Fortunately, this magical gathering is still a relatively small festival, and the movement helps keep the network of peaceful, music-yoga-lovers and vegans re-uniting in a mellow setting without too much disturbance from a local community; small towns embrace this festival as it temporarily brings in a good amount of business and exposure to remote areas.

The energy was very pure for me at Symbiosis because it wasn’t overblown with 50,000 guests, and people were accessible as you could run into a new friend, time and time again, actually bringing people together for the full event instead of just one magical moment lost in time.  You will find “Burners” at Symbiosis Gathering most likely going through Burning Man de-tox, reminiscing about the crazy and beautiful artwork at Burning Man this year.

Water is one of the most undervalued commodities on this planet and it is one of the most important draws for me to come to Symbiosis Gathering.  At Burning Man I find myself in swirling dust storms and I cannot dip into fresh water and swim from venue to venue, listening to music as I backstroke in the fresh water, and then dance next to uninhibited people after a long swim, pulsating my wet body to fresh rhythms with clean mud swirling between my toes.

This water-haven festival could be my temporary heaven on earth and this is why Symbiosis is so special to me as it will always be held on a waterfront area, allowing festival guests to naturally cleanse themselves in the buff and lay themselves on the grassy waterfront.  Although skinny-dipping is not allowed, it is still widely done with no bother.  I admit that I was naked in the water as well.  Why not?  Why should we be afraid to show our naked bodies when it is us in the most pure form.  Power to the naked.

It was a very lovely, long swim; I just put my head down, flopping my arms in the cool water until I reached the first venue area, The Cove, with the wolf statue nearby that was brought from Burning Man.  I got out, danced in the crowd, and warmed my body in the warm sun to sweet grooves.

After I got my fill of music at The Cove, I jumped back into the fresh reservoir and began swimming my next journey to the Empire of Love. It was a routine that felt so healthy, and when combined with Yoga and amazing vegan food at the Kiosks, I was energized with a very healthy weekend that gave me a high on good health and sobriety (well almost).  Another great aspect of Symbiosis Gathering is the great selection of vendors that provided a wide selection of food, including a great selection of vegan meals and earthy desserts to die for.

I came to Symbiosis on a journey by myself not sure what I was looking for, but somehow it found me, immediate connections with positive people that were open to communicating.  Some would immediately greet me with a hug when meeting for the first time – a wonderful, warm first reception that Americans normally aren’t use to.  Most European cultures greet with a kiss, or two or three, on the cheek – much better then a handshake, well, at least for me!

Another great aspect of Symbiosis was the commerce that was allowed by artists.  Artists were selling their artwork, goods, clothing, and creative wares.

I also noticed at Symbiosis that there were musicians that would wander around with their instruments, hoping to meet another wandering, soulful musician with notes to share.   I witnessed this violin and trumpet player jamming not too far from the heavy beats of the Pantheon, feeding their impromptu jam-session.

I was ecstatic to see the band, Ecstatic Union, wandering barefoot past the food kiosks while jamming their songs, with their posse singing along.  Their girlfriends were handing out free copies of their latest Album titled Sundog while they walked along the field singing their songs.

The most welcoming group I met was the Hare Krishnas, and one in particular, Chandra, was so completely magnetic with positive energy; I was drawn into their circle of open arms and soothing chants.

Chandra would spend her time face-painting new friends and entertaining them with her exuberant and animated conversation that would have me smiling and laughing.  I spent a lot of time with the Krishnas, surrendering to their harmonium meditations in a relaxed state of bliss.

They gave me free cookies and taught me their prayers and beliefs.  I wandered away with beads and subconsciously feeling and hearing the transcendental vibration of my consciousness being revived by the love of my new Hare Krishna friends.  There chants remain inside me.  Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare…

Symbisosis festival really lives up to it’s definition of interaction between two different organisms living in close physical association, typically to the advantage of both; a mutually beneficial relationship between different people or groups – well, maybe it should be defined as an interaction of many different organisms living in close physical association.  I learned from some people that were really different then myself, but we came together vibrantly because we shared the common interest of loving the people very much that care for our planet and really live it in celebration.  The Hare Krishnas have contacted me again and I shared with them a blurp about my latest adventure, sailing away on the ocean to Alaska.  We will meet again and I will venture to Symbiosis again and again!  This love is to be continued.  Thank you Symbiosis Gathering.  No more words… just photography… here you go festival lovers…

I flew from Warsaw to Belgrade excited to see what Serbia had to offer.  I originally wanted to take a train from Krakow, Poland to Belgrade, but the train routes were slow with many stops; it probably would have been better to take a bus, but it still would’ve been a long, slow ride.  I found a last-minute cheap-flight from Poland –  I figured I won’t be in this part of the world for a long time so I really wanted to get to Serbia to see how different it would be from my experiences in nearby countries like Hungary, Poland, and Ukraine.

NATO bombings caused substantial damage to Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, during the Kosovo War in 1999.  I thought the architecture was very similar to Ukraine, with old, drab communist-era buildings.  However, I did find some old, decrepit buildings aesthetically attractive and the people were so much more friendly, warm and approachable then the Ukrainians.

I stayed at Hotel Moscow which was in a central location with nice rooms.

A wide pedestrian walkway with shops and restaurants leads to Kalemegdan Park and the old, Belgrade fortress that is close to 1500 years old.

The Belgrade Fortress sits high above the Danube, providing a lovely view.

The Danube river runs through the city which is home to many clubs and party boats docked along the Danube.  I had a fun night dancing and admiring the beautiful patrons at some pretty wild and packed party boats.

There are lakeside beaches in Belgrade that have restaurants and beach clubs all along the water.

Beach Clubs and cafes are lined up, one after one, all around the lakeside waterfront.  It seems that during the Summer this waterfront is nonstop, jammed packed with locals – especially on the weekends with parties rocking out music all night.

Cable wakeboarding is popular which is wakeboarding on a pulley wire system with ramps on the water course to jump off.

At night this place is alive, with clubs blasting music.  I found it interesting to hear lots of latin music, and saw some amazing Latin, Merengue, and Salsa dancing outside.  Although my stay in Belgrade was short, I had a good feeling about the people here.  I saw them leading very active lifestyles and were very easy to approach.  I wish I had more time to explore more of the outdoors and other cities in Serbia.

Prague, also known as Praha, is the capital and largest city of the Czech Republic. This lovely city, centered on the Bohemian Basin, has several, old stone-bridges over the Vltava river.

Prague has some fantastic attractions which include the Prague Castle, The Charles Bridge, the Prague Astronomical Clock, the Old Town Square, and much, much more.  The architecture varies everything from the Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, to the ultra modern, creating one of the most unique and beautiful cities in Europe.

St Charles Bridge, built between 1357 and 1378, is one of the oldest stone bridges in Central Europe.  The bridge is packed with tourists slowly walking along and admiring the scenic view, lovely statues, street vendors, artists, and live musicians.

The public transit system here is excellent, fast, cheap and easy.  I love the design of the metro stations and they have an efficient tram system along with bus and ferry as well.

I was able to find a mellow outdoor flea market with drinks, food, and a free film-screening about building and sustainability.

I hit the jackpot on a recommendation to dine at the Imperial Hotel which is home to a very famous chef.  The Chilean Sea Bass was fantastic, the service was impeccable, the restaurant was affordable, and the décor was classic.  I couldn’t have asked for a better meal at a better cost.

There is plenty of wild night-life in Prague with a wide variety of stylized bars, clubs, and absinthe bars.

You can even find absinthe ice cream – Yummy!

I was lucky to meet two, beautiful local girls who took me under their wing for a little dancing at one of the top night clubs, Club Roxy.  The locals were very cool and interested in California culture.

I noticed the police in Prague were much more tolerant of marijuana then other European cities – although it is not legal. I walked into one bar where a patron was rolling a spliff on the bar and everyone was very relaxed about it.

old town Warsaw, known in Polish as Warszawa, is the capital and largest city in Poland.  This big city is located on the Vistula River which has some popular hangouts for locals, especially during the heat of Summer.  The city centre is home to many big business and institutions, creating a modern day city with tall buildings and wide avenues.  However, Warsaw has an Old Town quarter which has lovely architecture that still gives some of this city wonderful character.

But I only stayed here one night, 15 hours actually, on a long layover from a Polish Airlines flight from Krakow to Belgrade, Serbia.

I figured I could quickly jet-set a night through Warsaw and I did, enjoying a wild night of partying with some local girls I happened to meet in public on the Vistula River.  We walked to various parts around town and I was able to get a small taste of what this city has to offer.  I didn’t stay here long enough to document this city properly, but I was here long enough to re-enforce my fondness for the Polish.  I spent most of my time in Old Town because I’m not so much a modern soul – meanwhile I reach for my Ipad.  I’m an antique soul, I swear it!

I was in Krakow, Poland and running out of time as I wanted to move forward with my traveling because I had few cities ahead of me in less then a week’s time.  Usually when tourists visit Krakow they take a day tour to Auschwitz Concentration Camp to learn about the horrors of the Third Reich in Polish areas and the efficient extermination of the Jews by the Nazis in World War II.  It was a tough choice not to visit the camp, but instead I drifted into a beautiful mountain town called Zakopane by word of mouth from the streets of Krakow.

I took an easy, comfortable, cheap bus-ride for two and a half hours.

I figured I could go have a relaxing trip in the mountains opposed to being swamped with the depressing education of War at Auschwitz.

Zakopane is a small, artistic mountain town that the Polish call their winter capitol as it is a prime destination for mountaineering, mountain biking, and skiing. It’s in a beautiful valley between the Tatra Mountains and Gubalowka Hill near the border of Slovakia in Southern Poland.
